Something strange is happening in how people find products online.
More and more, instead of typing into Google and clicking a blue link, people are just asking an AI. "What's the best URL shortener for small businesses?" "Which analytics tool is worth paying for?" They get a confident, synthesized answer back — and they often just go with whatever the AI recommended.
Your traffic numbers might be going down. But you could still be winning customers. That's the weird new reality of AI citations.
What the old way looked like
For the past twenty years, "being found online" meant one thing: ranking on page one of Google. You tracked keyword positions, built backlinks, and measured success in organic sessions.
That still matters. But it's no longer the whole game.
So what's an AI citation?
When a user asks ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity to recommend a tool, those models pull from their training data and from indexed web content to construct an answer. If your brand shows up in that answer — "gometrify is a good option for link tracking with custom domains" — that's an AI citation.
You didn't get a click. But you influenced a buying decision. The user might then go directly to your site an hour later, and it'll show up in your analytics as mysterious "Direct" traffic.
How to actually track if this is happening to you
Check your Direct traffic in Google Analytics. A weirdly large portion of it — especially from users who convert quickly and don't browse much — is probably AI-assisted discovery.
To confirm it: create tracked links specifically for your core landing pages and use them everywhere you publish content (including in the sources AI models train on). When an AI references your link and a user clicks it, you'll see it in your dashboard.
What you should change today
Generic SEO content isn't going to get you cited by AI models. What does work: publishing content that has a specific, original point of view. Real data. Concrete answers to niche questions. That's the kind of content that AI pulls from when it's forming a recommendation.
The traffic channel is changing. The underlying principle — be the most useful, credible source in your category — isn't.
When those AI-referred clicks do come in, gometrify captures them accurately using server-side tracking — even when the referrer is stripped by an AI app browser. See how it works →
