Launch Tool

You want to shorten a URL. You go to a well-known link shortening service, type in the link, and get a popup: "Create a free account to continue."

You close the tab and look for something else.

This is one of the most common friction points in marketing workflows — tools that call themselves "free" but require an email address, email verification, and sometimes a payment method before you can do a single thing. Here is a straightforward breakdown of what actually exists in the no-signup space and what you should use depending on what you need.

When no-signup makes sense (and when it doesn't)

A URL shortener with no account requirement is useful when:

  • You need a short link immediately for a one-off use
  • You're sharing something casually and don't need click analytics
  • You want to test whether a tool is any good before committing to it
  • You're shortening a link for personal use rather than a marketing campaign

It's the wrong tool when:

  • You need to know how many people clicked the link
  • You're running a marketing campaign and need UTM tracking
  • You want a branded link that builds trust with your audience
  • You need to be able to edit or delete the link after it goes live

For one-off personal use, no-signup shorteners are fine. For any professional or marketing use, you almost always want a tracked, branded link — even if the tool that creates it requires a free account signup.

Free URL shorteners that work without an account

TinyURL

The oldest major shortener still operating. TinyURL has always allowed anonymous link shortening — paste a URL, get a short link, no account needed. The links use the tinyurl.com domain. You can also add a custom alias (e.g., tinyurl.com/yourword) if it's available.

What you don't get: any click data, any ability to edit the link later, any branded domain. What you do get: a working short link in under five seconds with no friction.

is.gd

A simple, minimalist shortener that requires no account. URL in, short link out. The interface has barely changed in a decade, which is either reassuring or concerning depending on your perspective. No analytics, no tracking, no account. Good for a quick share and nothing more.

v.gd

Sister service to is.gd. Identical functionality, slightly different domain. Some networks or firewalls that block is.gd don't block v.gd, so it's worth knowing about as a backup.

What you actually lose without an account

The no-signup shorteners above will shorten your link. They will not:

Tell you if anyone clicked it. This is the biggest gap. You share a link, it disappears into the world, and you have no idea if it was clicked once or a thousand times. For any marketing or business purpose, this makes the link essentially unaccountable.

Let you add UTM parameters automatically. UTM parameters are the tags that tell Google Analytics where traffic came from. Without them, any click from a shortened link appears as "Direct Traffic" in your analytics — even if someone clicked it from your email campaign. The guide on UTM tracking explains why this matters.

Allow you to change the destination later. If the URL you pointed the link to changes (a page moves, a product sells out), you cannot update the short link. It will point to the old, broken URL forever.

Use your own brand in the link. A link that reads tinyurl.com/3k7abc tells the recipient nothing about where they're going. A link that reads yourbrand.co/summer-sale builds trust and recognition. Research consistently shows that branded short links get higher click-through rates than generic ones.

The better middle ground: free tools that track without requiring a paid plan

Several tools offer a genuinely free tier that includes basic analytics without requiring a paid subscription. The tradeoff is that they do require an account — but account creation is free and takes about 60 seconds.

gometrify

gometrify's tools — including the UTM builder — work without any account. You can build, tag, and shorten links immediately. For the full branded short link experience with click tracking, a free account gives you that without a paywall.

The difference from no-signup shorteners: you can see how many people clicked your link, where they came from, and what device they used. For a marketing professional, this is the minimum viable information for any link you share publicly.

Bitly (free tier)

Bitly's free tier allows a limited number of links per month with basic analytics. You need an account, but there is no credit card required. The free tier has become more restricted over the years, so check current limits before relying on it for volume use.

What to actually use

For a one-off personal link with zero time to spare: TinyURL or is.gd. No friction, works immediately, no tracking.

For any marketing or business link: Use a tool that at minimum shows you click counts. Even the most basic analytics — knowing whether a link was clicked at all — is worth the 60 seconds to create a free account.

For campaigns that need attribution: Build the link with UTM parameters first (so your analytics platform can attribute the traffic correctly), then shorten it. The UTM Builder does both steps in one — generates the tagged URL and shortens it for you — with no account required to use the builder itself.

For links you'll share publicly for any length of time: Use a branded short link on your own domain. Links on shared shortener domains (tinyurl.com, bit.ly, etc.) can be flagged as suspicious by spam filters, social media platforms, and corporate firewalls. Links on your own domain bypass most of those filters and build rather than dilute your brand recognition.

The no-signup shorteners are a reasonable quick fix. For anything that matters — campaigns, social posts, email, anything you're measuring — they're the wrong tool for the job.
