Most businesses launch ads the same way: open Ads Manager, upload the creative, paste in a URL, and hit publish. Then they watch the numbers come in and try to figure out what's working.
That approach leaves you dependent on the platform's self-reported numbers and gives you almost no ability to diagnose problems. Here's a cleaner way to do it.
Before you open Ads Manager: set up your tracking
This step gets skipped constantly and it's the one that matters most.
Step 1 — Decide on your UTM tags before you build anything
UTM parameters are the labels that tell Google Analytics (or any analytics tool) where a click came from. You need to define them before you build links, not after. For a campaign running on Instagram, it might look like:
utm_source=instagramutm_medium=paid_socialutm_campaign=q3_launch_2024
Keep everything lowercase. Use underscores instead of spaces. Write down your naming conventions so the next campaign uses the same format.
Step 2 — Build the tagged URL and shorten it
Use a UTM builder to assemble the full destination URL with all parameters attached. Then wrap it in a branded short link. This gives you two layers of data: the click count from the shortener, and the downstream behavior from your analytics. Use our Free UTM Builder to avoid building these by hand.
Running the campaign in Meta Ads
- In Meta Ads Manager, create a new campaign with a Sales or Leads objective. Never use "Traffic" if you care about conversions — Traffic objective optimizes for clicks, not buyers.
- Set your budget and audience at the Ad Set level.
- At the Ad level, paste your branded short link (not the long tagged URL) into the Destination URL field.
- Publish, then open your tracking dashboard. You should see clicks registering within minutes of approval.
Running the campaign in Google Search Ads
- Create a new campaign and choose Leads or Website Traffic, then Search.
- Write your ad headlines and descriptions. Under Final URL, paste your destination page.
- Under Ad URL Options, add your tracking template or UTM parameters separately — Google supports this natively in the tracking template field.
- Add your tracked short link as the Final URL if you want click data independent of Google's reporting.
Evaluating the results
After 48 to 72 hours, compare three numbers: what the platform is reporting, what your link tracker is showing, and what your CRM or checkout is showing as actual conversions.
Gaps between these numbers are completely normal — but the size of the gap tells you something. If the platform claims 300 conversions and your CRM shows 80, there's a serious attribution problem worth investigating. If the gap is under 20%, it's mostly noise.
