How to Give Every Influencer a Unique Tracking Link (And Finally Know Your ROI)

Influencer marketing is one of the hardest types of marketing to measure. You pay someone a fixed fee to post about your product, they post, you see a small uptick in traffic, and then you spend the next three weeks trying to figure out whether the campaign paid off.

Most brands handle this by checking if sales went up during the campaign period. That's better than nothing, but it's not attribution — if you were running other campaigns at the same time (ads, email, SEO), you can't separate the influencer's contribution from everything else.

The solution is simple, and most brands aren't doing it: give every single influencer their own unique tracked link.

Why a unique link for each influencer changes everything

When you send all your influencers to the same URL, you can't tell who drove what. If you have five influencers and you see 2,000 clicks on your campaign page, you have no idea which influencer sent 1,500 of them and which two sent almost none.

When each influencer has a unique link, you know exactly:

  • How many clicks each influencer drove
  • What countries their audience is in (is their "global" following actually relevant to your market?)
  • What devices their audience uses
  • When most clicks came in (immediately after the post, or trickling in days later?)

This data tells you who actually has engaged followers vs. who has inflated numbers. It tells you which influencers are worth working with again. And it gives you a real click-to-sale figure for each partnership.

What to look for in the click data

Volume vs. conversion rate. An influencer with 500,000 followers who sends 200 clicks is worse than one with 50,000 followers who sends 800. Engagement rate matters more than follower count.

Country breakdown. If you're selling in the US and 70% of an influencer's click traffic is from a different country, their audience isn't your audience — regardless of what their media kit says.

Click timing. Most legitimate influencer clicks happen within the first 6–12 hours of posting. If you see a suspiciously even distribution of clicks over many days, something might be off.

Device split. If an influencer claims their audience is primarily mobile but most clicks come from desktop, that's worth investigating.

How to set up unique tracking links for influencers

Step 1: Create a unique tracked link for each influencer

In gometrify, create a new short link for each partner. Give it a clear alias so you can identify it: links.yourbrand.com/sarah-jones or links.yourbrand.com/tiktok-aug-sarah.

Set all links to go to the same destination page. The only difference is the link itself — each influencer gets their own unique one.

Step 2: Send each influencer their specific link

Make it easy for them. Send a clear brief that says: "Please use this exact link in your post: links.yourbrand.com/yourname". Tell them not to shorten it further or change it — using their own shortener would strip your tracking.

Step 3: Brief them on placement

A link in an Instagram Story with a "Swipe Up" (or the newer "Link" sticker) gets far more clicks than a link buried in a caption. A link mentioned verbally in a YouTube video gets fewer clicks than one pinned in the top comment. Work with influencers on the best placement for your campaign goal.

Step 4: Monitor in real time

Your gometrify dashboard shows click data as it comes in. You can watch the first few hours after each post goes live to see which campaigns are getting traction immediately.

How to calculate actual ROI

Once you have the click data, you can run the real numbers:

  • Cost per click: Influencer fee ÷ total clicks they drove
  • Conversion rate: (Purchases from their link ÷ clicks) × 100
  • Cost per acquisition: Influencer fee ÷ purchases from their link
  • Revenue from campaign: Purchases from their link × average order value

To track purchases back to a specific influencer, you can either use UTM parameters on the destination URL (so Google Analytics tags the session with the influencer's campaign name) or use discount codes unique to each influencer alongside the tracked link.

The combination of unique tracked links + unique discount codes gives you the most complete picture of influencer ROI available without needing any complex software.

Scaling this to a larger influencer program

Once you're working with more than a handful of influencers, managing individual links manually gets messy fast. A few organizational tips:

Name links consistently. Use a format like influencer-[name]-[month] so you can filter and compare later. influencer-sarah-jul is much more useful than sarah1.

Group them by campaign. If you run a "summer launch" with 10 influencers, group all their links under the same campaign tag. You can see total campaign performance and individual performance at the same time.

Archive old links, don't delete them. If an influencer's post stays live, their link will still get clicks months later. Deleting the link breaks every post they ever made with it.
