People Are Buying Without Clicking. How Do You Track That?

The customer journey used to look predictable. Someone searches Google. They click a result. They browse your site. They convert. You see it all in Google Analytics.

That's not most journeys anymore.

Today, a meaningful portion of buying decisions go through an invisible middle stage: the user asks an AI tool a question, reads the response, forms an opinion about your brand, and then either dismisses you or decides you're the right choice — all without clicking a single link. When they eventually do visit your site (by typing your URL directly, or Googling your name), your analytics records a "Direct" visit and you have no idea what brought them there.

This is the zero-click customer journey, and it's getting more common as AI search becomes more popular.

Why it creates an attribution problem

Traditional analytics is built around the click. Something has to be clicked for it to be tracked. When influence happens inside an AI conversation, there's nothing to click, nothing to pixel, nothing to attribute.

The result is that your branded search and direct traffic numbers might be rising — and you genuinely don't know if that's because of great content, paid awareness, word of mouth, or AI recommendations. Which means you can't make good decisions about where to invest.

What you can actually do about it

You can't install a pixel inside ChatGPT. But there are a few things that help.

Track the moment they do click. When a user goes from AI research to actually visiting your site, they'll usually either type your URL directly or do a branded Google search. If your branded search clicks are growing, and you haven't run any new brand awareness campaigns, that's worth noticing. It might be AI referrals.

Create content designed to be cited. AI models pull from high-quality, specific, well-structured content. Generic blog posts get ignored. If you publish a specific, opinionated answer to a niche question — with original data or a clear point of view — you increase your chances of being referenced in an AI response. When that user eventually clicks through, you want tracked links on your site so you capture the data.

Watch your direct traffic for conversion quality differences. Not all direct traffic is the same. Look at the behavior metrics — pages per session, time on site, conversion rate — for your direct traffic over time. AI-referred direct traffic tends to have higher intent than random direct visits, because users have already done research before they showed up.

The zero-click era doesn't mean attribution is dead. It means you need to measure influence, not just clicks. And when the click does finally happen, make sure everything's in place to capture it cleanly.
